Side effect information varies enormously in quality depending on the compound. For approved medicines it comes from thousands of monitored participants. For most research peptides it does not exist. Both situations appear on this site, and telling them apart is the first step.
Where good safety data exists
Approved peptide drugs publish adverse event rates alongside placebo rates. The GLP-1 class is dominated by gastrointestinal effects:
| Effect | Semaglutide 2.4 mg | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea | 44% | 16% |
| Diarrhoea | 30% | 16% |
| Vomiting | 24% | 6% |
| Constipation | 24% | 11% |
| Abdominal pain | 20% | 10% |
From the Wegovy FDA label. The placebo column is what makes these numbers meaningful.
Serious risks and contraindications
- Boxed warnings on approved GLP-1 products concern thyroid C-cell tumours seen in rodents; they are contraindicated with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.
- Pancreatitis presents as severe, persistent abdominal pain and needs urgent medical attention.
- Low blood sugar becomes a real risk when these drugs are combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
- Tesamorelin is contraindicated in active cancer, pituitary disruption and pregnancy.
- Bremelanotide raises blood pressure temporarily and is avoided in uncontrolled hypertension or heart disease.
Where the data runs out
For compounds like BPC-157, TB-500, KPV and MOTS-c, "side effects" cannot be stated honestly, because no controlled human studies have measured them. Material presenting these compounds as having a mild side effect profile is describing an absence of data as though it were a finding.
Compounds with documented harm
Melanotan II is the clearest example of a research peptide with real published case reports: new and changing moles, melanoma diagnosed in users, and rarer reports of kidney infarction and rhabdomyolysis. Health authorities in several countries have issued public warnings.
The product itself is a safety variable
For anything bought online, what is in the vial is part of the risk. In 2026 testing of 18 samples of a single compound, only one matched its labelled amount; about a third were stronger, about a third weaker, and one contained none of the compound at all. Peptide typically made up around 10% of vial contents.
Sterility is rarely tested at all. Most vendor certificates confirm identity and purity, not whether an injectable product is free of bacterial contamination or endotoxins.
